Project title: Clinical application of whole genome sequencing in multidrug resistance tuberculosis patients in Tanzania
Funder: European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnerships (EDCTP
Coordinator/EDCTP Fellow: Dr Bugwesa Zablon Katale
Call: Career Development Fellowships
Start Date Programme: 2020-10-1
End Date: 2023-9-31
Project Code: TMA2018CDF-2363
Status: Active
Main objective: To determine the clinical application of whole genome sequencing in the diagnosis of multidrug resistance tuberculosis patients in Tanzania
Objectives:
Primary objective
a) To describe drug susceptibility against first and second line antituberculosis drugs
b) To identify molecular markers associated with drug resistance M. tuberculosis in these population isolates
c) To describe associations between drug resistance genotype and clinical outcome
d) To determine the genetic relatedness of drug resistance M. tuberculosis isolates
Work Packages
Work Package 1: Project Management and Capacity building
Work Package 2: Determination of clinical and demographic information from MDRTB and non-MDRTB patients
Work Package 3: Phenotypic drug susceptibility testing and identification of molecular markers associated with drug resistance
Work Package 4: Determination of genetic relatedness and phylogenetic relationship of drug resistance M. tuberculosis isolates
Work Package 5: Determination of the role of genotypic mutation alone or in combination in clinical outcome
Work Package 6: Dissemination, exploitation and communication of research findings at local and international levels
Study design: Unmatched case control study
